Managing Your Poker Playing Career
True, Poker is a game that most people play for fun, but if you are serious about earning money, or entertaining thoughts of turning pro, you need to focus on certain areas to help you assess and grow your money.
Poker Bankroll
If the bankroll strategy guides on the Internet are confusing you, perhaps it would make more sense if you think of it in the following terms: you are a company that wants to make money, and you begin by making an initial investment (that would be your initial bankroll).
Using that analogy, you should now realize that regardless of your investment/bankroll, two things become apparent: you will need to put in some cash to make money, and as with any business enterprise, it will take time to recuperate your investment. Some would instead prefer to use the analogy of a fee; doing so makes it easier for some people to accept the early losses that is usually incurred in Poker.
Room for Modification
Poker strategies cover a broad spectrum, from the different playing styles, to analyzing opponents, to the actual tactics that should be used for a particular variant ( Texas Holdem, Omaha, etc). Whatever the strategy you may use, one thing needs to be said, and that is every game plan must be adaptable and flexible enough to allow for innovations, subtle or drastic, should the situation call for it.
Too many players play by the book (the so called ABC Poker), and while this may work on occasion, it will make you very vulnerable against highly skilled players, which can hamper your overall earnings in the long run.
Discipline
Managing your Poker playing career requires discipline. The word may mean different things for different people, but the bottom line is the same: you must practice what you have learned.
What this means is that you don't get married to your hands, you don't chase cards, and taking breaks when on tilt, to name a few. You will read this advice often, both in books and online; the fact that there are a lot of people still losing and making bad plays shows how hard it is for most individuals to instill discipline in their game.
One final advice for successfully running a Poker playing career; never entertain thoughts that you already know it all. It doesn't matter if you have made a fortune already; the game, as is often said, takes a lifetime to master, so never stop learning. Persevere in this regard, and you will not only recover the initial investment/fee, but also profit.
