Using the Check Option in Poker Properly

Some players like to use the check option in Poker a lot, while others hardly avail of them at all. The fact is that like all strategies it has its place in the game, and its effectiveness will rest on when you use them.

If you are playing in a cash game, checking is a Poker strategy that you can use to try and put more money in the pot when you have the nut hand. By checking, you will give the impression that you do not have anything solid (otherwise you would have raised). However, this option should only be exercised assuming that you have the best hand. You do not want to check and give your opponent the free card that beats your hand.

In a short handed Poker game, checking is not something that you will want to use. The reason is that given the fast paced nature of the game, plus the fact that there are few players in, means that you will have to make the most of the cards that you have. Aggression is also key, and checking is not something that you should do in short handed games.

In a Poker tourney, the check will depend on the situation. If a short stacked player goes in, the usual scenario is that if you call, another one will follow and with both callers checking, the odds will force the short stacked player to bust. But if you check and the other player wagers, you could end up folding, only to see the short stacked player with a beatable hand.

Checking can be used in Poker tourneys properly but as stated there are risks. Another example would be if you are holding KQ and the flop shows K-10-2. Instead of betting with your KK, you check to the turn (a J) and river (8), hoping to cash in. At the showdown, your opponent turns up a Q9. You lose.

Checking is a Poker strategy that has its uses, and like all tactics, you must always be aware of the circumstances so that you will be able to avail of them. The problem with a lot of players is that they do not know how to use it properly, and end up thinking that the strategy is useless.

Know where you stand, and you will realize that checking can be one of the most useful and profitable tools you can use.
